INTERVIEW: SoundLava Interview With “Dave Tony”

I am Dave Tony A Singer and Songwriter from Harlem NY, My Sophomore Project The Truth is set to release in November. It is a collection of 5 tracks following my journey to healing from oppressive religion.

Q. What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
A. I was born into a very musical family. My Grandmother played piano and almost everyone in my family sings, so music was present in my life from a young age. I could not fathom any other chosen path. Church played a big part in my path being a musical director in an affirming ministry helped form my passion for music.

Q. Tell us about your new music (Song/EP/Mixtape/Album)? And what’s the story behind it?
A. My new EP is called “The Truth” it is Alternative R&B and Soul music with elements of rock as well. The EP is a collection of music focused on my journey from oppressive religious trauma as a Jehovah’s Witness to my Freedom.

Q. What makes your music unique? How would you describe it? (genres/sub-genres)
A. My music is heavily focused on harmonies and intricate rhythms. It has elements of Alternative , Rock R&B and Pop. It is a fusion of different sounds that inspire me.

Q. Who are your biggest music influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
A. I am inspired by a plethora of artist as I have an eclectic taste in music. Artist such as Prince, Maxwell, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd and Erykah Badu influences me. Though I don’t think my music mirrors theirs, i have been greatly inspired by their unique sound and ability to create monumental musical moments. There are a few artists I would love to collaborate with The Internet, Khalid and Giveon.

Q. How long have you been in the music industry?
A. I have been singing professionally since 2006 so 16 years. I started singing background vocals but released my debut album in 2016.

Q. Which is the best moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of? (Awards, projects or public performances etc.
A. I am most proud of my music being featured in an independent film called “Domestically Cursed” As well having 2 #1 songs on an independent Radio show called “Da Professor’s Lounge”. I also had the change to share the stage with Lady Gaga at a NYC Pride Rally in 2017.

Q. How do you balance your music with other obligations – family, friends or work?
A. My partner is also a creative so often we are working on something creative together however I make intentional time to spend time with my family. Since family inspires my creativity, it works well. I’m a firm believer that having a complete balanced life makes you a better artist.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
A. Do everything you do with passion and master your craft! The work you put in today will manifest in greatness clearly in the future and if you don’t master your craft if will manifest in mediocrity

Q. If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
A. It would be to never be afraid to tell your truth because it is your truth that makes you uniquely you.

Q. What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
A. My sophomore project called “The Truth” is set to be released on November 12,2022 and working on my second music video as well.
